Rooibos Tea, The Alternative to Caffeinated Tea

Also called red bush, the rooibos tree grows in South Africa in poor acidic soil. The fermented stems and leaves are used to make a red tea that is known to cure digestive troubles when taken orally and to treat skin allergies like eczema when used topically. It is said to be high in antioxidants and it doesn’t contain caffeine like tea or coffee.

I was first introduced to rooibos tea when I visited Mamma J in Sechelt, British Columbia a while ago. She used to buy bulk organic rooibos at a tea shop downtown. What I liked most about it was that it didn’t have any tannin so you could brew a strong tasting tea without the bitterness of green or black tea. I liked its mild taste and found it very soothing. I took a break from it for a while and then I started drinking it again after I quit drinking coffee and tea.

My preferred morning drink is roasted dandelion root tea and now that I don’t drink caffeinated tea anymore (not even regular green tea) I like to drink my cup of rooibos tea in mid morning and mid afternoon. If I don’t drink it all, I simply make fresh iced tea to accompany my next meal. It is very refreshing with a slice of lemon and/or orange.

I noticed that regular rooibos tea with nothing added was sometimes hard to find in small towns. They always put too much stuff and I like mine just plain. If it’s your case, you have to try the Numi organic rooibos tea at Well.ca. At only .65 cents a cup, it’s delivered for free to your door anywhere in Canada; all you have to do is provide the water and the cup and the rest is all taken care of!
