Note: This was written in 2012 when the Kava ban of selling kava in Canada was in effect.

Many people ask if you can buy Kava in Canada. The answer is yes, you can important and use kava for your own personal consumption. It is perfectly legal to have your kava shipped to your door. You just won't find any products containing kava in retail stores because of a 'stop sale' ban imposed in 2002 which made it illegal for stores to sell it. So when Canadians want kava they buy it from the USA (Hawaii), Fiji, Vanuatu or New Guinea and have it shipped into Canada which is perfectly legal. Strange isn't it!

Since 2002, Health Canada recalled all products containing kava and required a stop-sale all across the country. The blame has to be put on some kava-containing products that left some users with liver injuries in the UK, in Germany, in Switzerland and in the United States. Canada is playing safe and I don't want to believe that they're doing so in order to protect the pharmaceutical industry.

They are doing it to protect Canadians. They have enough on their plate with all the junk being sold right now, and from what I can see after visiting another Canadian website boldly still selling kava in 2009, they're not doing a very good job at catching the "outlaws" so far... We have to understand that kava is known to only a minority of Canadians who traveled to the Pacific Islands or people finding information about it on the web. We have to go with the law in order to build trust and a good reputation, and tell ourselves that at least it is not totally banned, and it is still possible to import kava for personal consumption.

 

 


Anything we ingest, even if natural can have side and negative effects. Kidney stones for instance can be the result of ingesting too much coffee, spinach, tea, nuts, chocolate, beets, beet greens, rhubarb, strawberries and wheat bran.

Whoa! Too much sugar and processed food can lead to diabetes. Alcohol can cause irreversible liver damage. Saturated fats from meat and dairy products can clog your arteries and kill you. A high salt diet can raise your blood pressure and kill you. I can go on and on, you get the point, you know what I mean. I lost a 53 year old loved one as well as many family members because of cigarette, alcohol and artery clogging saturated fats.

 

For the moment, we, healthy Canadian kava drinkers, will serve as "volunteer guinea pigs". We'll give Health Canada the evidence they need (for some reason I think that's what they want) and prove that pure root only kava is safe. We'll be like Kava Prophets!

It is interesting that such countrywide bans on kava have been instituted considering that the human toll on such legal "drugs" as alcohol and tobacco have been allowed to be sold on street corners all over Canada and other countries invoking the bans in early 2002.

Studies have suggested that the processing of the kava using ethanol and acetone may have created a toxic "liver-blasting" mixture that caused deaths and liver troubles in some countries. Much of the Western World issued a ban on kava.

Naturally protecting citizens from poorly processed food or drink is part of the governments job but if the processing was to blame it is a shame that the entire kava industry was thrown out as well!


One Australian University of Queensland team of researchers led by Jerome Sarris has now found a traditional extract of the drug to be 'safe and effective in reducing anxiety'.

As the researcher so eloquently stated:

“When extracted in the appropriate way, Kava may pose less or no potential liver problems. I hope the results will encourage governments to reconsider the ban,” Mr Sarris said. “Ethanol and acetone extracts, which sometimes use the incorrect parts of the Kava, were being sold in Europe. “That is not the traditional way of prescribing Kava in the Pacific Islands.

“Our study used a water-soluble extract from the peeled rootstock of a medicinal cultivar of the plant, which is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia and is currently legal in Australia for medicinal use. “In addition to benefiting sufferers of anxiety, allowing the sale of Kava in Europe, the UK and Canada would significantly enhance Pacific Island economies, which have lost hundreds of millions of dollars by not being able to export the plant over the past several years.”

The struggle to legitimate the positive health benefits of kava has been long and difficult.Pacific Islanders have long known its psychosomatic and psychological benefits, but science has taken its time to arrive at the same conclusions.Germans were the first to scientifically isolate kava's active ingredients and they have remained at the forefront of kava research for the past 100 years.European bans on kava products that came into force after a liver-health scare in 2001 placed the drug under the scientific microscope once again.

Following Europe's example, other western nations similarly banned kava products in 2002.Their collective negative response naturally adversely affected the Pacific, and especially Fiji's ability to profit from kava exports.Kava-apologists subsequently tried a number of strategies to get the Europeans to reconsider their bans, but to no avail until the first International Kava Conference was held in Suva at the end of 2004.The overwhelming orientation arising out of that conference was the need for more refined clinical trials on aspects of the Pacific drug.

One participant at that conference, Dr Matthias Schmidt, a pharmaceutical consultant on herbal drug safety and member of the International Kava Executive Council, had been one of kava's most ardent researchers in recent years.Along with scientists from Munster and Mattsies (Germany), and using Samoan 'noble' kava roots (which are rich in kavain-type kavalactones), as well as Vanuatu extracts (which were taken from the higher stem of the plant and which are high in other compounds), Schmidt and his colleagues found an analytical parameter for the definition of acceptable kava quality'.

This was good news for kava growers and exporters seeking to meet the exacting US, EU and UN standards imposed since the 2001 kava scare.In other significant research, Schmidt and another scientific team from the Universities of Braunschweig and Kaiserslautern tested extracts from Samaoan kava roots and Fijian roots for kava's supposed hepatotoxic and cytotoxic effects.

Using their laboratory rats and 'bioactivity-guided investigation' to help to isolate kava's alleged toxic properties, their verdict came as a comfort and delight this time to Pacific kava drinkers because, as Schmidt concluded, the kavalactones 'yangonin, demethoxyyangonin, kavain, methysticin and dehydromethysticin showed no cytotoxic effects in primary rat hepatocytes'.

Vinaka, but as scientific work continued, the problem refocused not on eliminating doubts about the alleged negative effects of kava, but not specifically on demonstrating its positive effects. That is, while scientists like Schmidt tested kava's allegedly toxic elements, little clinical research was being carried out to prove its positive, beneficial medicinal and neutrimedical effects.

Consistent with this gap in thinking, German health authorities ruled that their bans on kava were not merely because of the low statistical risk of toxicity, but on the lack of empirical proof of kava's 'efficacy in the indication, for stress-related anxiety'.

As a result no kava-ingredient products were licensed for that potentially lucrative market.That may now change substantially.

As Sarris puts it, the UQ placebo-controlled study found kava 'to be an effective and safe treatment option for people with chronic anxiety and varying levels of depression'.'We've been able to show that kava offers a natural alternative for the treatment of anxiety', he said, 'and unlike some pharmaceutical options, has less risk of dependency and less potential of side effects'.

 

Sarris further states that 'kava (has) a positive impact on reducing depression levels, something which had not been tested before'. Referring to the bans in place in Europe, the UK and Canada due to concerns over liver toxicity, Sarris's message is of further encouragement to Pacific kava growers: 'When extracted in the appropriate way, kava may pose less or no potential liver problems. I hope the results will encourage governments to reconsider the ban'.

Importantly, the University of Queensland team steered clear of the ethanol and acetone kava extracts, which may have resulted in misleading scientific conclusions in the past and which were sold to European consumers.As Sarris rightly notes, 'that is not the traditional way of prescribing kava in the Pacific Islands'. The potential impact of Sarris's corrective clinical trials should not be overstated, yet there is now clear scientific ground for asserting what Pacific peoples have always known ' moderate kava consumption is medicinal and not just social in function.

Sarris concludes that 'in addition to benefiting sufferers of anxiety, allowing the sale of kava in Europe, the UK and Canada would significantly enhance Pacific Island economies, which have lost hundreds of millions of dollars by not being able to export the plant over the past several years'.

That is all good news and should sound a fervent taki in all of us as we see science finally coming to better recognise that we in the Pacific have long had the best medicine to meet any upsurge in global psychological depression resulting from global economic depression - kava.

It only makes sense that any substance ingested or introduced into an organism will have some effect on the physical or cellular activity of the organism. I have a cup of coffee in the morning to wake up! It is no question that that single dose of caffeine has an affect on me and my vital organs! Same goes for a few beers on a hot day ... I feel it and my body is affected. Perhaps the ban on kava in Canada and other countries will eventually be lifted...maybe that will be a good thing both for island economies and those of us who are troubled by anxiety, depression and other issues that may be relieved by using this wonder of the our natural earth!

Update June 2014 - The German Kava Ban of 2002 has been struck down!
